Warner Bros.’ Coming DC League of Super Pets will feature an obscure DC character: Krypto’s father, Zypto.
In a video spot shared by Warner Bros. on YouTube, Krypto (voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) can be seen talking to a holographic projection of his deceased father, Zypto. Projected from the front of Krypto’s collar, Zypto is depicted as a white dog with an elegant mustache and wearing the dog’s version of a Kryptonian’s spacesuit, with the cape included. The projection isn’t around for long, but he does offer some words of encouragement to his son shortly after the capture of Krypto’s master and best friend, Clark Kent/Superman, voiced by John Krasinski.
Krypto’s pedigree has only been hinted at once in his comic book past. This makes Zypto’s appearance in the film one of the first seen in media since its original mention in 1966. super boy #126, “The Krypto Family Tree”, by Otto Binder and George Papp. The story traces Krypto’s genealogy back to his father, Zypto; his grandfather, Nypto; and finally his great-grandfather, Vypto.
As with most comic book characters, Krypto the Superdog’s origin story has changed over the years, but he first debuted in a story alongside Superboy in adventure comics #210 by Binder and Curt Swan. He was originally the family dog of the House of El and later a test subject for Jor-El’s early incarnations of the rocket ship that would take his son, Kal-El, to earth. The ship was overturned and would be adrift in space for many years until it landed on Earth. Reunited with Kal-El, now the teenage Superboy, Krypto possessed powers on the caliber with the Man of Steel but commensurate with a dog. This meant super strength, speed, and intelligence that allowed Krypto to think and react with the same abilities as a human. Later iterations have since reduced his intellect to that of an average dog, but with the enhanced physical abilities of a Kryptonian under a yellow sun.
Krypto’s abilities will be put to the test in the upcoming Warner Bros. animated film, DC League of Super Pets, which will see the Justice League captured by Lex Luthor (Marc Maron) and hairless guinea pig Lulu (Kate McKinnon). Luckily, a number of the shelter’s pets are given powers and form their own league to save the imprisoned superheroes, including Wonder Woman (Jameela Jamil), Bruce Wayne/Batman (Keanu Reeves), Jessica Cruz/Green Lantern (Dascha Polanco), The Flash (John Early), Aquaman (Jemaine Clement) and Cyborg (Daveed Diggs).
Joining Krypto in the League of Super-Pets will be Ace the Boxer, aka the Bat-Hound (Kevin Hart), PB the Pig (Vanessa Bayer), Merton McSnurtle the Turtle (Natasha Lyonne), and Chip the Squirrel (Diego Luna).
DC League of Super Pets debuts in theaters on July 29.
