Today, Bandai Namco announced through a press release a partnership with the Japanese artificial intelligence startup ACES in the field of character animation.

The project, led by Bandai Namco’s research arm, aims to achieve a more natural and intricate level of character animation that audiences can more easily sympathize with. This would increase the value of games and videos. Additionally, by improving communication between online users, including within a metaverse, new forms of entertainment can be created.

The goal is to use an AI technology called Motion Style Transfer that breaks motion down into its content and style. The content can for example be “walking” and the style “fortunately”. You can then add the styling to the content, creating a new animation that would walk happily, providing more nuance.

To create this system, a large set of character movement data is needed. Combining the expertise of both companies, they capture professional artists with a wide variety of emotions, genres, age ranges, and more.

At this time, there is no information on what projects Bandai Namco intends to use the results of this project, but it certainly sounds interesting. We’ll have to wait and see what comes of it.
